Devi Temple This secluded temple dedicated to Durga has beautiful bells, echoes of which can be heard from some distance. Nearby is a temple of Lord Rama. Chaubatia Garden 10 kms from Ranikhet on a motorable road, Chaubatia is a vantage point set amidst gardens. On a clear morning a 300 kms wide view of the snow-clad Himalayan peaks can be seen clearly from Chaubatia. The NandaDevi, Trishul, Nandaghunti and Nilkanth peaks are very clear. Upat (Golf Course) With one of the best 9 hole golf links in the country, Upat is a boon to the enthusiast. With the added attraction of private orchards, it is 5.6 kms away. Just 1 km. from Upat is Kalika with its famous temple to the Goddess Kali. It also has good forest nursery. A beautiful snowcapped mountain peak is available on the other side of the golf link at Upat - From Kalika a 45 minute drive away, through misty, pine forests is another temple, the Binsar Mahadev. Bhalu Dam Bhalu Dam is an Artificial Lake and is situated 3 kms away from Ranikhet. Majkhali A vantage point on the road to Almora. On the Ranikhet - Almora road, 13 kms is a spot of entrancing, celestial beauty. Here is an awe-inspiring view of the majesty of the snowy peaks. The Uttarakhand Government Agriculture Farm is situated here. Shitalakhet 35 kms from Ranikhet. Scenic spot offering a fine view of the Himalayas. It has lush orchids and is also known for its herbal and medicinal plants. It is an ideal place for a peaceful holiday. Dwarahat 38 kms from Ranikhet on the Badrinath road, was once the seat of the Katyari kings who are said to have ruled from the Great Himalayas to the plains. It is now famous for its 55 temples divided into 8 groups dating from the 11th century and have some fascinating stone carvings. A 5 kms walk from Dwarahat, or 15 kms away by road, is Dunagiri with views of the Himalayas. There is also a Durga temple built in 1181 A.D. Dunagiri 52 kms from Ranikhet, famous for its temple dedicated to Durga Devi. The temple bears an inscription dating back to 1181 A.D. Heda Khan Temple Hera Khan Temple and Ashram, near Chilianaula village, is 4 kms from Ranikhet Bazaar. The Hindu saint, Hera Khan, died in 1984 and the modern marble-faced temple with a garden was constructed according to his wishes. The baba had many European followers and the ashram is inhabited mainly by them. Tarikhet Beloved of Gandhi On the same road, 8 kms away from Ranikhet, is the spot, Mahatma Gandhi fell in love with and stayed for a length of time during the days of the Independence struggle. Here, he came for peace of mind which he always found. Now a developing town ship, the house Gandhi stayed in, GandhiKuti,and Prem Vidhyalaya are the chief attractions. There is a good Rest House, built in beautiful surroundings. Bhim Tal Named after one of the Pandava brothers, this, the largest lake in the district, is 1701 meters by 454 meters making it 265 meters longer than Naini Lake. Situated at a level of 1371.6 meters it is 22 kms from Nainital. Known for its robust majesty, Bhim Tal has an exquisite gem in the middle of the lake - an is let situated within the range of temple bells, which have been chiming for the last 300 years in the 17th century edifice, beneath the shadow of the towering mountain as it rushes precipitously down to the emerald green of the lake. The island, situated close to the north-east side, is only 91.4 meters from the shore. Picturesque spot where nature reigns supreme in all her beauty, Sat Tal, or Seven Lakes is 21 kms from Nainital. Here are seven small but exquisite lakes; including Panna, Nal-Damayanti, Sita, Government and the Sukha Tal Lakes in the midst of thick tall, pine oak trees. Here, too, is a tiny wild life sanctuary Ashram run by Dr.Stanley Jones of America. The Nal-Damyanti Lake is loaded with a variety of fish. Naukuchia Tal A haven for the fishing enthusiasts, this fine lake, with nine corners, is 4 kms to the north-east of Bhim Tal. Khairna and Bhikiasen They are situated on forest road, 22 kms and 53 kms from Ranikhet respectively - famous for fishing. Mainla Only 13 kms from Bhikiasen and 66 kms from Ranikhet, out of which 13 kms are negotiated by a bridle Path; lead to beautiful Mainla, in the midst of the mighty mountains. Bhowali (1706 metres) 11 kms to the east of Nainital, Bhowali is an ideal spot for those in search of fragrant pines, for a day's outing, week-end, or even the whole summer. Enclosed by a pine forest, the crisp, salubrious air makes it an ideal spot for the finest T.B.Sanatorium in the state. It also has a Rest House and Tourist Bungalow, besides a few ordinary hotels. Hanuman Garhi and Observatory An ecstatic spot reputed for its glorious sun-set, the Hanuman Temple, has turned lately into a pilgrim centre as well. Near the temple is Uttarakhand Government Astronomical Observatory and the Satelite Tracking Centre well worth a visit. |
